After giving it a lot of thought I’ve decided to put my hike on hiatus. Thank you all for joining me on my journey. To be continued…

There should be more places like the Doyle in Duncannon. Cheap, no-frills rooms, and good food. I ate so much I feel drunk with food.

Foooood Cooomaaa! (Said in a cookie-monster-esque voice, I think.)

Dad
Duncannon is indeed an oasis. So is Port Clinton, unfortunately a little too close to Duncannon to be a real lifesaver.

How better to celebrate hiking over half the #AT than to eat half a gallon of ice cream, an AT tradition. I had mint chocolate-chip. Yum.

Dad
You should be across the Susquehanna by now. Peter’s Mtn. Shelter is very fancy if you stop there. Congratulations.

From sweltering heat to thunderstorms. The AT always keeps you on your toes.

Mom
Where are you?

Thank you state of Maryland for putting up a campground with bathrooms and showers. Perfect place to wait out another 95+ day.

Dad
Too bad it wasn’t open when I was there.

I can now confirm that a journey of 1,000 miles DOES begin with a single step. And then is followed by a couple million more.

Amazing where your steps have taken you in this journey. Congrats on making the first thousand!

Shenandoah NP restaurants are killin’ me. Sunday: hike .5 off trail, no power. Today: closed between lunch and dinner.
-
Dad
Restaurants! Thought you were supposed to be surviving on freeze-dried, twigs, bark, nuts and berries. Restaurants!
-
Gibbs
If they’re going to put restaurants along the AT, I’m gonna use them. My biggest problem was I had planned my re-supply around not needing dinner for those days.

Are you dodging cars on the Skyline Drive?
-
Gibbs
I was, but no longer. Out of SNP, and soon to be in West Virginia.

Today in “Things that could kill me.” Saw two bears and two rattlesnakes. A new record! In Waynesboro now, where cars are a bigger threat.
-
Dad
Were they green? (The snakes, not the bears.) The ones I saw up in PA were bright green. And big!
-
Gibbs
The first one was, the 2nd one was all black. Thought it was a rat snake at first, good thing I checked.

No fireworks for me yesterday, but I did have buffalo chicken and rice with turkey bacon. That’s kinda patriotic, right?
-
Dad
You killed a buffalo! My god, how could you? That is so unpatriotic!
-
Gibbs
What could be MORE American than killing buffalo?
-
Lauren
terrible.
